A British-Iraqi family from Surrey was on what would turn out to be their final vacation together in September 2012 when three of them were brutally murdered.

In the lakeside town of Annecy, near the Swiss border, was Saad al-Hilli, his wife Iqbal, their daughters Zainab and Zeena, and Saad’s mother-in-law Suhaila. They had stopped to harvest apples on a warm afternoon. Saad has previously gone paragliding.

When someone approached them, Saad had just parked his car with the engine still running. Then, he was shot dead at close range along with his wife and mother-in-law. Zainab, who was seven years old and standing outside the vehicle, was also shot, pistol-whipped, and left for dead.

Zeena was just four years old and was hidden in the back seat under her mother’s skirt. For the following eight hours, she would stay covert there. Sylvain Mollier, a 45-year-old French biker, discovered the awful image. He was also shot to death.

The murderer ran away. Another cyclist, retired RAF pilot Brett Martin, showed up a short while later. Brit Martin had a vacation home nearby. He took in the scene, which he initially assumed was an accident, before noticing the dead and bullet holes.
