Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick Before Midnight

East Stroudsburg resident Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick didn’t have to do much preparation to play the small role of Ethan Hawke’s son Henry in “Before Midnight.”

On-screen, Hawke and Davey-Fitzpatrick’s characters share a tight emotional bond. Off-screen, Davey-Fitzpatrick felt as if he’d known Hawke and director Richard Linklater all of his life. “Ethan and Rick were the coolest guys to hang out with,” says the 14-year-old actor. “We had a blast together.”

When Davey-Fitzpatrick found a few lines tough to say, Hawke, who co-wrote the screenplay with Linklater and co-star Julie Delpy, updated the dialogue for him.

But what really impressed the teen actor was Hawke’s knowledge of a Greek beverage called the Submarine Water Taffy. When Davey-Fitzpatrick and his father, actor Jim Fitzpatrick, joined Linklater and Hawke for lunch, Hawke ordered the drink for Seamus.

“They put the saltwater taffy into this drink but it doesn’t dissolve completely so you can eat the taffy and then, at the end, you can drink what’s leftover,” says the actor, who’s best known for his turns in “The Omen” (as the title character) and “Moonrise Kingdom.” “It was pretty cool.”

Shot and set in Greece, “Before Midnight” is Linklater’s finale to the acclaimed trilogy, which also included “Before Sunrise” (1995) and “Before Sunset” (2004). In the first movie, Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy) fall in love while walking and talking through the streets of Vienna.

In the nine-years-later follow-up “Before Sunset,” they reunite in Paris where she’s living and flirts with a reunion. Now in “Before Midnight,” they’re finally a couple raising twin daughters. Davey-Fitzpatrick portrays Hawke’s son from his first marriage. The movie, now playing in Philadelphia, opens Friday at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks and the 19th Street Theater in Allentown.

After completing “Midnight,” Davey-Fitzpatrick played a supporting role in “Wish You Well,” a dramedy starring Ellen Burstyn, Josh Lucas, and Mackenzie Foy. He also starred in “Northern Borders,” a coming-of-age saga set in Kingdom County, Vermont. The drama begins when Davey-Fitzpatrick’s father drops him off at Franklin’s Farm to be raised by his warring grandparents (Bruce Dern, Genevieve Bujold).

“The movie is about [my character] learning things about my messed-up family, including all of these crazy stories about our background,” the actor says. “At the same time, I’m befriending new people and meeting other interesting relatives.”

Co-starring in the movie is Jacqueline Hennessey (the daughter of Sean Hennessey from the Irish band Blackwater) as well as Seamus’ dad, Jim Fitzpatrick, who plays Dern’s cousin. For Seamus, sharing a scene with his father wasn’t all that different from the prep work the pair do before every one of Seamus’ movies.

“Whenever I get lines, I run them with my dad so I can memorize them,” says the actor. “So this was the same exact thing except for this time my Dad was in a costume and the cameras were rolling.”
