Raoul Trujillo (born Raoul Maximiano Trujillo de Chauvelon) is an actor, choreographer, and theatrical director from the United States. He is the founder, choreographer, and co-director of the American Indian Dance Theatre. He was previous soloist with the Nikolais Dance Theatre. Trujillo has worked in film, television, and theater for more than 30 years, as well as hosting number of dance shows. He has been nominated for Critics’ Choice Award.

Trujillo is most known for his roles in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto (2006) as Zero Wolf, merciless Mayan slave hunter, and in the film Black Robe as the Iroquois leader Kiotseaton. He has starred in number of well-known and critically praised films, including The New World, Cowboys and Aliens, Riddick, Blood Father, Sicario, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

Raoul Trujillo Career

He began his career in the theater as scenic painter before landing his first role as an actor/dancer in performance of Equus in 1977. In 1978, he began dancing at the University of Southern California, where he saw his first modern dance and ballet shoes, including Pilobolus, Martha Graham, and Rudolf Nureyev. 
On scholarship, he spent the next two years training with the Toronto Dance Theatre and Nikolais/Louis Dance Lab in New York City. He was invited to join the Nikolais Dance Theatre, which he joined under the guidance of master Alwin Nikolais, who became his mentor and with whom he toured the world. Between 1980 and 1987, he also studied scenic, costume, and lighting design.
Following his departure from the group, he began working as solo dancer and choreographer, embarking on journey into shamanic rituals and incorporating native myths and stories into his work. 
He became the choreographer and co-director of the American Indian Dance Theatre, the first professional native dance group that combined traditional dance with contemporary interpretation of myths and tales, after decade of performing as dancer. 
“The Shaman’s Journey,” which he choreographed for the Asia Society in New York, was eventually transformed into short film for PBS’s Alive from Off Center. He then moved to Toronto to work with artistic colleagues Alejandro Roncerria and René Highway.
Native Earth Performing Arts was able to produce successful theatre productions as result of this work. His collaboration with Alejandro continued, and he assisted in the establishment of the Aboriginal Dance Project at the Banff Centre, which aims to train Indigenous dancers from around the world. 
In 2002, he was awarded CANCOM Ross Charles scholarship to the Banff Center’s screenwriters program for aboriginal storytellers. 
Trujillo began his cinematic acting career in Canada in 1988 and has over 107 film and television credits to his name. He also acted as Tomocomo in Terrence Malick’s The New World, choreographing the dances, ceremonies, and rituals.
