Miri Ben-Ari (Hebrew:) is an Israeli-born American violinist who was born on December 4, 1978 in Ramat Gan, Israel. She is now based in the United States. Ben-Ari grew up playing classical music; she began lessons at the age of five and was given a violin by Isaac Stern at the age of twelve. She was selected to perform with the Israeli Army String Quartet during her obligatory Israeli military duty. She fell in love with jazz after hearing an album by Charlie Parker while serving in the Israeli military; she subsequently stated, “My soul was sold.” She went from Israel to New York following her service, hoping to utilise her classical skills on stage, and enrolled .
The New School’s Jazz programme, but was dismissed after two semesters due to poor attendance caused by Ben-Ari doing jobs to pay the rent. In 1999, she released her debut solo album, Sahara. Her perseverance won her a spot on BET’s 106 & Park, and the show’s popularity prompted her to return a few weeks later. Jay-Z was impressed by her performances and asked her to appear as one of the headliners at Hot 97’s annual Summer Jam event in 2001, where she received a standing ovation. Around the same time, a mutual acquaintance connected Ben-Ari to Wyclef Jean, who asked her to play alongside him at his Carnegie Hall performance, the venue’s first ever by a hip-hop act. She released her second CD, Temple of Beautiful, in 2003, and followed it up with a live album, Live at the Blue Note, the following year. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Song in 2005.
