She was the ninth of ten children and was born and raised in the Philadelphia suburb of Paoli, Pennsylvania. She comes from an Irish Catholic family. Mary Pat was class president of Delaware University in 1985, a position also held by her spouse since he was also class president in 1984. Mary earned her MBA from Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

Mary Pat Christie decided to start a career in investment banking for herself after completing her education. She worked at a Wall Street investment firm and eventually became Angelo, Gordon & Co’s Managing Director. She was the family’s main breadwinner, earning $500,000 in 2014 with the couple’s combined earnings of $700,000.

Mary Pat Christie’s job wasn’t without its difficulties when, on 9/11, she was actually working at a Wall Street investment agency two blocks from the site of the bombings. She was unable to reach anyone by phone at the time and consequently could not get in touch with her relatives. It took her four hours to cross the Hudson River to New Jersey by boat. Upon reaching New Jersey, Mary became soaked and covered with a blanket as she was sprayed with a fire hose along with other survivors. This was done to ensure that no contamination from the terrorist attack was transmitted to New Jersey.

In April 2015, Mary Pat Christie quit her job with Angelo, Gordon & Co., saying she wanted to be closer to her family. This also helped spread rumors that she was returning home to support her husband for his presidential bid. When Hurricane Sandy hit areas along the Jersey Shore in 2012, Mary Pat took a three-month break from her job to establish and operate the Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund. To help with fundraising, she recruited New Jersey U2 singers Bono and Bruce Springsteen.

It also hired a board of directors with key expertise in disaster relief, including CFO Anita Bhatt, who served as CFO of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund established after the 2010 earthquake. In the two years following the hurricane, the organization raised and distributed over $40 million, primarily to help New Jersey residents rebuild their homes and small business owners affected by the storm.

Again, Mary Pat Christie used her fundraising skills in support of Chris Christie’s presidential campaign, which took him to town hall meetings and rallies in 2015. When Chris was forced to return to New Jersey due to a severe snowstorm in January 2016, Mary remained in office in New Hampshire, replacing the governor on scheduled campaign halts.
