Luke Macfarlane is a Canadian-American actor and singer who is best known for playing the role of Scotty Wandell in the ABC TV series’ “Brothers & Sisters” which lasted for five seasons.

Early life, family, educational background

Thomas Luke Macfarlane was born on 19 January 1980 in London, Ontario. His late father, Thomas, was a director of Student Health Services at the University of Western Ontario. Penny is the name of his mother, a mental health nurse at a London hospital. He has a twin sister named Ruth, and Rebecca, an elder sister.

Luke finished his High School at London Central Secondary School, then studied drama at the famous Juilliard School in New York City.


Luke started his acting career during college as he actively participated in New York theatrical scene. He got the chance to join in the productions like “The Grapes of Wrath”, “The School of Night”, and “Romeo & Juliet”, before graduating in 2003 from the drama division. He then played in “Juvenilla” at the Playwrights Horizons Theater as one of the four leads.

In 2004, he performed the lead role in the play “Where Do We Live”, and cited as the Outstanding New York Theatre: Broadway and off-Broadway, by the 2005 GLAAD Media Awards.

When it comes to television, Luke had supporting roles for a 2005 FX series “Over There”, where he played as PV2 Frank “Dim” Dumphy, also on the Sundance Channel, a role opposite to actor Cynthia Nixon in Robert Altman’s miniseries “Tanner on Tanner”.

Luke got his first notable role by playing Scotty Wandell on the ABC drama “Brothers & Sisters” (aired from 2006 – 2011), his characted was the husband of one of the “brothers” of the show named Kevin Walker which was played by Matthew Rhys. He also starred on the Space television science fiction “Killjoys” (aired from 2015 – 2019) as RAC Agent D’avin Jaqobis. He appeared in the movies including “Maggie’s Miracle Christmas”, “Christmas Land”, and “The Mistletoe Promise.”

Despite being on television, he still actively participated in theatre and performed in the productions such as “The Busy World is Hushed” (2006), Howard Ashman’s unproduced musical “Dreamstuff”, and in the stage drama “Reverberation” (2015).

In his music career, Luke was the lead singer as well as the song writer of a band named Fellow Nameless. The band produced one half-studio, half-live CD album, and then recorded additional ten songs but it never got put out. The band also played a showcase of Maverick Records for Danny Strick A&R.

Luke’s personal life made an interest in the eyes of the paparazzi as he had been rumored as gay. It appeared on the headlines from time to time as they said the he was often noticed being in the company of men, where most of them were also celebrities.

Gay rumors became in the spotlight when Televisionista Blogspot posted in 2007 a headline including him dating the “Prison Break” actor Wentworth Miller. They confirm that they have been secretly dating for over 6 months.

But then, in April 2008, Luke admitted that he is gay, at The Globe and Mail, and he concedes that he is ‘terrified’, he said ‘I don’t know what will happen professionally … that is the fear, but I guess I can’t really be concerned about what will happen, because it’s my truth.’

Also in an interview in The Juilliard Journal, he was asked if he was concerned about coming out as gay will negatively affect his career, which he then answered, ‘I think anytime as an actor you step out and choose to engage with the media in any sort of way that reveals your personal life, it can be frightening. However, I feel strongly that there is a distinction between revealing my sexual preference and my most private thoughts. My sexual preference is one irrefutable aspect of me, like the color of my skin. I’ve never been interested in revealing intimate details about my life. The concern with engaging with the media has to do with trying to make sure they will understand this difference.’

Luke’s first known boyfriend was Charlie David, who is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He was also seen together with T.R Knight. The most famous relationship he had was with Wentworth, but they went separate ways afterward. Then he was seen with Chad Slivenski, a wrestler cum actor, but the rumor lasted for a short time.

Currently, Luke is said to be single, and maintaining privacy about his relationships.
