Georgia Holt, and John Paul Sarkisian. Her stepfather was Gilbert Hartmann LaPiere.
Cher’s father, John Sarkisian, was an Armenian-American truck driver while her mother, Georgia Holt (born Jackie Jean Crouch) is a former model and retired actress. Her parents divorced when she was ten months old.
Cher has a half-sister Georganne following her mother’s earlier marriage to actor John Southall. She rose to prominence as one-half of the folk rock husband-wife duo Sonny & Cher in 1965. Their song “I Got You Babe” peaked at number one on the US and UK charts and they sold 40 million records worldwide.
Cher solidified her name with her top-ten singles “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and “You Better Sit Down Kids”. Aside from music, she had a television career and appeared in the 1970s CBS show The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, as well as Cher. She became the female artist with the most number-one singles in United States history at the time following the release of the US Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves”, “Half-Breed”, and “Dark Lady”.
